The size is determined by 2 main measurements:

W: waist circumference at the expected belt area;
L: inseam length from the crotch to the shoe level.

For example: women’s jeans marking W31L34 means that the jeans are made for a person with waist circumference from 29.1 (in) to 30.7 (in) and leg length around 33.0 (in).

Except numeric marking the alphabetic INT format marking is often used on the labels. Distance choosing of jeans marked in alphabetic way (M,L,XS) is not recommended, as the spread between the sizes is large.
